The SEM Mobile Lab

Scanning Electron Microscopy, brought directly to your building. Real-time mold identification at magnifications no standard test can match.

What It Is

A Full Lab, Built Into a Van

Most mold testing sends a swab to a lab and waits days for results. CERI's SEM Mobile Lab is different: a scanning electron microscope mounted inside a purpose-built vehicle that comes to your location.

The van is already outfitted with screens, a dedicated workspace, and the infrastructure to run the Scanning Electron Microscope, known as "the Cube." CERI is currently completing the final instrument acquisition, and the mobile lab will be fully operational on-site.

At magnifications from 300x to over 10,000x, the SEM identifies not just whether mold is present, but exactly what species it is, what it's made of, and whether it's the same type found elsewhere in the building.

The Process

How On-Site SEM Analysis Works

01

Sample Collection

CERI technicians collect mold samples from affected areas: walls, HVAC, ceiling cavities, anywhere contamination is suspected.

02

On-Site Analysis

Samples go directly into the SEM in the van. The scope images the sample at magnifications from 316x up to 10,000x and beyond, capturing elemental composition alongside visual structure.

03

AI-Assisted ID

Oxford Instruments' AI recognition software cross-references the images against a growing mold library to identify species in real time. No lab turnaround, no waiting.

04

Independent Verification

QC samples are periodically sent to a certified DAV lab for confirmation. Clients receive full disclosure of the verification process. No black boxes.

05

Actionable Report

You get same-day findings: species, concentration, elemental signature, and a clear remediation recommendation, not a generic "mold present" finding.

06

Future: Virus Detection

The same SEM platform is being developed to identify airborne viruses. CERI's long-term roadmap includes expanding real-time identification well beyond mold.

Real Results

Mold Under the Microscope

The images below are actual SEM analysis results from real CERI job sites. Each sample, collected from a different location in the same building, showed a completely different mold species with a unique elemental fingerprint. That's something a standard tape-lift test cannot tell you.

Every Mold Is Different

In one building analysis, three separate samples, from a hallway closet, a second location, and a third area, each revealed a distinct mold type with a different elemental composition.

Sample TS3 alone contained carbon, oxygen, iron, sodium, magnesium, aluminum, silica, and potassium. That level of detail changes what remediation you need to do.

Standard air sampling reports "mold count." The SEM tells you what you're actually dealing with.

Sample Analysis: Three Locations, Three Different Species

SEM mold sample TS1, hallway closet
Sample TS1: Hallway Closet Analyzed at 316x – 7,520x magnification
SEM mold sample TS2
Sample TS2: Second Location Analyzed at 2,054x – 10,412x magnification
SEM mold sample TS3, multi-element composition
Sample TS3: Third Location Carbon, O, Fe, Na, Mg, Al, Si, K detected

Deep Zoom

From the Visible to the Invisible

The SEM can image the same mold sample at progressively higher magnifications, revealing structural detail that standard microscopy cannot reach. Below is Sample TS1 viewed from 316x to 7,520x.

The Team

Built With the Right Experts

Scott Fisher

Project Lead, CERI

Scott brings over 40 years of environmental construction, hazardous materials, and air quality work to this project. The SEM Mobile Lab is his answer to a question he's faced on job sites for decades: what exactly is that mold?

Industrial Hygienist

Berkeley-Based Research Partner

A certified industrial hygienist based out of Berkeley is working with CERI on the mobile lab program, contributing academic and grant-funded research experience to the protocol development.

Oxford Instruments

AI Recognition Software, Oxford, England

Oxford Instruments provides the AI-assisted mold identification software integrated into the SEM workflow. Their system enables real-time species recognition as samples are imaged, turning a raw scan into a named result.

Electron Optics Instruments LLC

SEM Equipment Partner

EOI LLC has placed scanning electron microscopes at Oak Ridge National Labs, MIT Lincoln Lab, Exelon Power, Ford Motors, and Rutgers University. They are CERI's SEM equipment partner for the mobile lab program.

Where We Are Now

The van is built and ready. CERI has already conducted real SEM analysis on multiple building samples, building the mold library and refining the process. The final step is installing the on-board Scanning Electron Microscope, which brings full mobile capability to any job site.
